A petition was delivered to the council against the development of Portobello Market by unscrupulous property developers. The original plans that were approved by the council show several retail units with market stalls which would have allowed the stall traders to move back in. In reality the building has been taken over by the huge chain store with the loss of the traders inside and along the pavement outside the shop front. The final result looks nothing like the application drawings submitted February 2009, which can be seen on the council website case ref no: PP /09/00363 a retrospective application has now been submitted for the fibreglass shop-front, the consultation is 5th - 26th March - see the application and have your say case ref: PP/10/00509
The property developer who owns the All Saints building also own several other buildings in Portobello and word is that they plan to do the same with these.
The Good Fairy Arcade traded for the last time last Saturday to make way for a new block of private flats with shops below signalling the loss of a further 30 or so market businesses. The new building will be as high as the pub next door. Although planning permission has been granted there is still a consultation taking place until 5th March. See case ref: PP/10/00363
